Two seed orders came in today, Prairie Moon Nursery and Select Seeds. :D I have marked them with the date so I know what year they came from.
(This is a favorite source of Midwest native plants.)
Prairie Moon Nursery
Wild Bergamot
Clustered Mountain Mint
Hairy Mountain Mint
Select Seeds
Aster - Smooth
Aster laevis
Clouds of small gold to garnet centered flowers bloom early to late fall, attracting native bees by the score. Lovely in the garden bed, where is should be placed away from spreaders that might overwhelm this willowy beauty.
Four O'Clock 'Marbles Mix'
Mirabilis jalapa
A delicious, sweet, orange-blossom scent is cast on the air every afternoon as these rare trumpet-shaped flowers open. This selection features the striped flowers that so enraptured past generations of gardeners. The scented flowers attract hummingbirds by day and moths by night.
Stock - Evening Scented
Matthiola longipetala subsp. bicornis
Past generations of gardeners called this plant the Melancholy Gillyflower because of its drab and downcast appearance during the day. At dusk, however, the lavender and white four-petaled blossoms unfold, each wee flower releasing an intoxicating scent. Sow directly in the garden in spring behind showier flowers. Listed in an 1886 catalog. Self-sows.
(This one is missing.)
Petunia 'Old Fashioned Climbing' (plant)
Petunia hyb.
Abandoned by commercial seed growers, this heirloom variety was passed on to us by Virginia Davidson, who recounts that her grandmother grew these around her porch. They are wonderfully fragrant in the evening, an attribute missing from many modern hybrids. Pastel lavenders, white magenta, and purple flowers bloom all summer and fall. Self-sows.
Hollyhock 'Indian Spring'
Alcea rosea
A vintage hollyhock that won an AAS award in 1939, 'Indian Spring' blooms in sumptuous shades of burgundy and red and soft pastels of pink, yellow, and blush. Impressive flowering midsummer through fall from seed planted early the same year. Get used to the hum of contented bees as they roam over these huge blooms. A biennial often grown as an annual.
Hollyhock - Fig 'Happy Lights'
Alcea ficifolia
The original species Alcea ficifolia or Antwerp Hollyhock, had yellow flowers and rust-resistant large lobed leaves. We offer a natural hybrid of this species with A. rosea in mixed colors, the large saucer-shaped flowers blooming along the tall stems in summer. The epitome of an old-fashioned flower, it looks best in informal settings, grown against old outbuildings and fences in masses—a biennial to short-lived perennial that often self-sows for another summer of bloom.
Yarrow 'Colorado Mix'
Achillea millefolium
A dependable, long-blooming stalwart of summer gardens, this yarrow shrugs off heat, withstands summers that lack rain, and refuses to become a self-sowing nuisance. The large flat heads of pastel-hued flowers pair well with sea holly's candelabra blooms, spires of agastache, and mounds of coreopsis and coneflowers.
