I made a post about landrace sunchokes, including sources where to buy the tubers or seeds.  These are sunflowers with small high-oil seeds and edible roots.  Mine grow 10-12 feet tall but there are dwarf varieties half that size.  They put out many palm-sized flowers that basically turn into living birdfeeders in late summer.  Note that sunchokes are self-sterile so you need either seeds, landrace tubers, or a plot with lots of diverse cultivars in order for them to set seed.  Mine are mixed landrace that rain seed everywhere and have birds all over them.  :D  If you have a large sunny place, these are a great choice for a native wildflower to attract birds.  Oh, and they're droughtproof.

Goofy cat.

Opened Mayhem's absolute favorite window, set up the phone with the Merlin Bird ID app going.

Got a great, long list of hits almost immediately- Northern Flicker, Red Bellied Woodpecker, several Sparrows, House Wren, Blue Jays, Cardinals, etc. Come back 10 minutes later and...

Mayhem had managed to shut the app down without saving it first.

*headdesk*

Now to start over, lol. (And of course, got Blue Jay hits immediately).

Waiting on Chewy order with suet, seed and such, which is sorely needed as several suet feeders are empty and I scattered the last of the seed this morning.

Got some native Elderberry and native Crabapple seedlings from Virginia Forestry. Hoping to get those planted this weekend and looking forward to what they bring to the yard in the future.

Today is cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds. I've seen a flock of sparrows, a downy woodpecker, and a fox squirrel.

I put out water for the birds.

I raked dead stems off the septic garden.

EDIT 3/2/23 -- I cut the seedheads off one sunflower stem and buried them in the septic garden.

EDIT 3/2/23 -- I cut the seedheads off the other sunflower stem and buried them in the septic garden.

EDIT 3/2/23 -- I gathered a trolley of sticks and dumped it on the firepit.

Yellow and purple crocus are budding under the walnut tree near the house. A lavender one is blooming in the goddess garden. :D

March Meta Matters is running over on [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge. I have posted about my activities here.

Has anyone written meta about fictional or mythical birds, or do you plan to do so for this event? If so, feel free to crosspost your meta to this community.  Use the tag birds: fictional if you do.

A great horned owl is hooting loudly outside my window.  :D  They do this a lot in autumn and winter.
